IШтат на Среднем Западе [ Midwest], ведущий в группе Северо-Восточного Центра [ East North Central States]. Площадь - 150 тыс. кв. км. Население - 12,4 млн. человек (2000) (пятый по количеству жителей штат). Столица - г. Спрингфилд [ Springfield], крупнейший город - Чикаго [ Chicago]; другие крупные города: Рокфорд [ Rockford], Пеория [ Peoria], Орора [ Aurora], Нейпервилл [Naperville], Декейтер [ Decatur]. На севере граничит со штатом Висконсин [ Wisconsin], с северо-востока ограничен озером Мичиган [ Michigan, Lake], граничит со штатом Индиана [ Indiana] на востоке и юго-востоке, и с Кентукки [ Kentucky] - на юге. Южная граница проходит по р. Огайо [ Ohio River], западная и юго-западная - по р. Миссисипи [ Mississippi River]. Штат расположен на Центральных равнинах [Central Plains], и 60 процентов его территории занимают прерии [ prairie], остальная часть занята холмами. В штате более 500 рек (крупнейшая - Иллинойс [ Illinois River]) и 950 озер. Умеренный континентальный климат. Во внутренних водоемах развито рыболовство (карп, зубатка [ catfish] и др.). Заметное место в экономике занимают туризм и сфера обслуживания. Иллинойс - ведущий многоотраслевой транспортный центр страны. Первый человек появился здесь в 5000 году до н.э., в XVII - начале XIX вв. здесь обитали индейцы иллинивек [Illiniwek], предки иллинойсов [Illinois II]. Земли будущего штата впервые обследованы в 1673 двумя французами - миссионером-иезуитом Ж. Маркеттом [ Marquette, Jacques] и исследователем Л. Жолье [ Jolliet, Louis], в 1680 р.
